The Subject of Subjectivity

Is it possible for a joke to be funny to everyone?  Is it possible that no one is offended, nobody is bored and everybody gets it?  Simply put, no, it’s not possible.  Comedy is painful because it exposes truths.  If a joke isn’t true not only will it be unfunny, it won’t make sense.  Jokes need to be offensive but they need to not cross a boundary.  But who’s boundary?

Attention Seeker

On last week’s episode we discussed the idea of celebrity and whether or not we want to be famous.  It’s a challenge to accept something knowing full well what the pros and  cons are before you agree to it.  The attention is what would perhaps be the biggest deterrent for both of us, which is ironic.  Snake and I fancy ourselves as funny people, hence why we decided to start a comedy podcast.  Being funny is an excellent way of getting attention and certainly one that I have used time and again.  If this is true, then why do I fear attention from fame?

What Makes You Laugh?

What the fuck is laughing?  It’s a phenomenon and a mystery and something so basic that every human on the planet does it.  Is it just what happens when you expect one thing and then are surprised by something unexpected happening?  Is it the soundtrack to joy and happiness?  Laughter is so hard to define yet so easy to do, and also, at times, easy to deliver and hard to sustain.  Not everyone is funny but basically everyone is capable of being funny (sorry Jeff Dunham, you’re one of the few).  Laughter is subjective, but laughing is objective.

Why Do We Podcast?

Creative expression manifests itself in many ways and takes on many shapes. Do you simply just focus on the medium in which you have the most talent? Do you create that which makes you happy? For us it is a little bit of both. I have been writing since college and am not afraid to admit that I am not a great writer, but I enjoy it, therefore, I do it for fun. I have always felt that I am a creative person but I could never pinpoinat my medium. I am a talker, a jokester and a quick wit, but what medium lends itself to that? It took me a long time to realize that podcasting allows me to be funny, introspective and use my most talented muscle, my tongue.
